2008 CHSA Medals

CHSA is pleased to announce the 2008 CHSA Medals!!

We listened to the membership comments and feedback after the 2007 CHSA Finals and the CHSA Finals committee recommended to the CHSA Board of Directors the addition of the CHSA Medal for the 2008 CHSA Finals.  Thus at the December 2007 CHSA Board of Directors meeting, the CHSA Medal classes were approved starting with the 2008 show season. (See other CHSA Board of Director actions from the December 2007 Board Meeting)

The CHSA Medal rules and format are a little different than many of the other medal classes, so please read the rules and regulations carefully. If you have any questions please email chsa@chsaonline.com.

We will be posting the point standings for the CHSA Medal classes along with the regular division point standings.  The first CHSA Medal classes will take place at The Pines Farm Winter Horse Show from January 11 - 13, 2008.

The CHSA Medal Finals will be included in the 2008 CHSA Finals to be held on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the Mystic Summer Festival.

2007 Good Sportsmanship Award

Sportsmanship_3

Renee Scarpantonio, 2006 Good Sportsmanship Award nominated and presented by Shaun Reese.

Do you know of a CHSA member who:

  • is always around, willing to lend a helping hand?
  • as a competitor who exhibits a sporting character throughout the ups and downs of the show year?
  • has persevered through various hardships to achieve personal success with their horse?
  • is a role model for juniors, amateurs and professionals?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, then you should nominate that person for the 2007 CHSA Sportsmanship Award !

Each year the CHSA directors vote on a nominee for The Good Sportsmanship Award.  This award will be given to a CHSA member each year based on conduct, cheerfulness and character, demonstrated during the show season. The award is given at the annual CHSA Awards Banquet. Nominees for this annual award should be proposed by the members of CHSA. It is not necessary that this nominee be a competitor. It could be a trainer, instructor, groom or anyone at all who is a CHSA member.

A few key things to keep in mind is the conduct and interaction of the nominee with trainers, parents, show personnel and other participants. The way a person handles sucess or defeat following a performance is a good indication of sportsmanship.  Integrity, honesty and adherence to the rules are also prime considerations.

Deadline for nominations is February 1, 2008. Send letter of nomination or questions to: Kristen Guadagnino 203 Regan Rd, # 9 Vernon, Ct.  06066 . Email: full.circle.farm@comcast.net

Tall Cynthia

Who knew Cynthia Jensen, President of CHSA, was once called "Tall Cynthia"!

Tall Cynthia and her fellow female polo players were featured in Sports Illustrated magazine on March 30, 1959.

The text below says:

"But Don't Call Us Cookies"

After a few weeks' practice together-and some pretty primping-these three Connecticut girls rode their polo ponies out onto the tanbark at Manhattan's Squadron A Armory.  The Connecticut Cookies was the billing matchmakers wanted, but the girls rebelled, firmly selected the name Southbury (Conn.) Polo Club.  They are the only members: Cynthia Michaels (Jensen), 24, a magazine editor;Ann Braun, also 24, a schoolteacher; and Helen Putzel, 17, a high school senior.  A women's polo is such a rarity that there was nobody to play but men.  Against a threesome known as the New York Knights the girls rode hard, played well, captured the crowd with their slim good looks and lost by a respectable 4 goals to 5.
