CHSA Awards Three Scholarships

The Board of Directors of CHSA is pleased to announce the awarding of three scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each to Jenna Burns of Deep River, Jessica Gross of Ledyard and Christen Scarpa of Mystic.  This is the third time that Christen has received a CHSA scholarship.  Jenna and Jessica are both former recipients of the CHSA Good Sportsmanship Award. 

Each year, CHSA awards scholarships to those deserving members who wish to continue their education beyond the secondary level.  The scholarships are funded through member contributions and the proceeds from CHSA Finals and the auction and raffle at the Year End Banquet as well as contributions from the CHSA operating funds.  The amount and number of scholarships is directly dependent on the availability of funds from these sources.

CHSA has established a Scholarship Program for members pursuing higher education.  Funding for the program comes from the proceeds of the Raffle items sold at the Annual Awards Banquet, donations given by members and surplus funds from the CHSA Finals.

Scholarship Applications for members wishing to pursue higher secondary education are now on line.
Deadline for submission of the Application is July 1, 2009.

In addition to need, applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

• Grades
• CHSA Involvement
• Participation in equine related activities
• Community Service
• Extra Curricular Activities.

In 2008, CHSA awarded $ 6,000 in scholarships to three of our members, The scholarship recipients were Paula Foohey, Caitlin Lewis and Christen Scarpa.

CHSA Awards Three Scholarships

CHSA Awards Three Scholarships

CHSA is pleased to announce the awarding of three scholarships, two in the amount of $2,000 and one in the amount of $1,000. This year was the most completive as far as the number and quality of the applicants.  The scholarship recipients for this year are Kim Brown, Amanda Olberg and Christen Scarpa.

Kim graduated from Quinnipiac University, Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She is continuing her studies at Quinnipiac in the Master of Arts in teaching program. She has also studied in Australia. This past summer she continued her involvement with the City Slicker program (a multi-cultural summer equestrian camp program for children at risk) as Assistant Camp Director. Kim was also enrolled in an intensive summer semester with the goal of completing her Master’s program within the year. She will be interning at Amity Regional Senior High School in Woodbridge this fall.

Amanda is a junior this year at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. She enjoys competing at the CHSA, CHJA and USEF adult jumpers throughout the Northeast. She volunteers for the Pet Loss Support Hotline and Voices Magazine both of which are Cornell sponsored programs where she will be the Treasurer this fall.

Christen graduated from Stonington High School and will be continuing her education at Quinnipiac University in the Business Program. She is an accomplished flutist, horse show competitor and volunteer. She has successfully competed in a number of Hunter Jumper and Equitation events in New England. Christen has also been a volunteer for the Animal Rescue Fund, Mystic Valley Hunt Club Summer Festival and the Amistad Friendship Society.

CHSA Awards Three Scholarships

CHSA is pleased to announce the awarding of three scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each to three of our members. The scholarship recipients are Kim Brown, Paula Foohey, and Victoria Valenti.

Kim has graduated from Quinnipiac University and will be continuing her studies at Quinnipiac in the Master of Arts in Teaching program. Kim has studied abroad in Australia and is hoping to attend a mission trip to Nicaragua in 2007. Kim has been involved for many years in the City Slicker program and has spent the summer of 2006 as a horseback riding counselor at the C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado.

Paula, who has graduated from Glastonbury High School, will be continuing her studies. at the University of Rhode Island. Paula’s extracurricular activities include the Spanish Club, National Honor Society and the Big Sister Organization.  In addition to her membership in CHSA, she also is a member of NEHC, and the CT Hunter Jumper Association and is a very active horse show participant.

Victoria has graduated from Springfield College and will be attending The University of Massachusetts in the fall of 2006. She will be in the Doctorate of Audiology Program with the goal of becoming a Pediatric Audiologist. While at Springfield College Victoria President and Captain of the Equestrian team, President of the sophomore, Junior and Senior classes, and active in a number of mentor programs for young students at various grade levels.

2005 CHSA Scholarship Recipents

CHSA Awards Two Scholarships!

CHSA has awarded two scholarships of $1,800 each to two of our young members, Caitlin Lewis and Kim Brown.

Caitlin Lewis is a graduate of Bristol Central High School where she was in the National Honor Society, took advanced placement classes, was on the Student Council and a member of the book club. She has been a high school volunteer in the elementary schools and is involved in the City Slicker Program at Hillside Equestrian Meadows.  Caitlin has shown successfully in the Hunter, Jumper and Western Pleasure divisions.  In 2003 she was the CHSA Stock Seat Equitation Champion in the 15-17 age group.  She is currently attending the University of Connecticut majoring in Animal Science with the hope of becoming a large animal veterinarian.

This is Kim’s third year as a CHSA scholarship winner.  She is now in her junior year at Quinnipiac University where she continues to excel in her studies.  She was fortunate enough to be chosen to spend her sophomore year studying abroad in Australia where she had many exciting experiences including backpacking through various areas and volunteering in village schools.  She is a Resident Advisor at school and has been accepted into the Master of Arts Teaching Program. She has been involved for many years with the City Slicker Program that brings urban and suburban youth together in an equine program.
